Qatar, the super-economy power, wants to show its strength to the world. The best way is to build a wide variety of luxurious buildings! Obviously, 2022 World Cup is a good "show off" opportunity for Qatar. Therefore, a variety of high-tech technology is applied into the football stadium.
The Qatar World Cup's seventh venue design has been announced- Las Abu Abed Stadium, designed by Fenwick Iribarren. Fixing the refitted containers on steel structures can realize quick assemble or disassemble of those containers and delivery of them to other sites for reuse after the World Cup game. This 40000-seat stadium is located on south-east of Doha, covering an area of 450,000m². The architecture near the water and can be divided into many container modular to echo the neighboring ports. Containers will be converted into stadium infrastructure including stairs, canteen and bathroom. Compared to traditional mode, modular constructions save materials, reduce waste and total carbon emissions and shorten the build time to three years. The goal for this stadium is to meet the four-star standard of the Global Sustainability Assessment System. Structural and civil engineering work will be led by Schlaich Bergermann Partner.
Although Las Abu Abed stadium is high-tech enough, Qatar doesn’t ignore the concept of environmental protection. The idea of container building is so amazing-containers being easily assembled or disassembled, damaged ones getting fastest repair and waste resource being recycled.
